Work together to save rivers

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury yesterday called upon all irrespective of their political affiliations to work together to save the country’s rivers.

“Civilisations developed along rivers’ banks. We have to take united efforts to save them,” he told a meeting, held on a BIWTA ship on the Buriganga. Nongor, a social organisation, organised it.

Various steps have been taken by the government to free rivers from illegal occupation and pollution, he added.

Awami League Information and Research Secretary Advocate Afjal Hossain, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Chairman Commodore M Mahbub-ul-Islam, environment expert Ezaz Ahmed, and Nongor President Sumon Shams also spoke at the event.
