Woman set on fire dies at DMCH

A woman, who was set on fire in Laxmipur allegedly by a man she claimed to be her husband, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital yesterday.

Deceased Shahinur was brought to DMCH by policemen from Laxmipur around 2am, said Bachchu Mia, in-charge of the hospital's police outpost. She breathed her last around 10:30am, he said.

Talking to reporters at Laxmipur Sadar Hospital earlier, the victim claimed she was married one and a half years ago to one Salauddin, reports UNB.

She recently came to know that Salauddin was married elsewhere and has two sons.

On Sunday, she rushed to Laxmipur's Ayub Nagar where Salauddin lived in his in-laws' house, and demanded to be recognised as his wife.

At one stage, Salauddin took her to a field and set her on fire by pouring kerosene, she alleged.

Shahinur was rescued with burn injuries around 5pm that day, and was admitted to Laxmipur Sadar hospital, said sub-inspector Abu Musa of Laxmipur district police outpost. She was later transferred to DMCH burn unit.

Sources at DMCH morgue, where the body was sent for autopsy, said she has 55 percent burns.

Morgue sources said no one came to receive the body as of yesterday afternoon, and that her autopsy would be conducted today.
