Why separate merit list for madrasa students

HC asks JU authorities

The High Court (HC) yesterday issued a rule on Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities to explain in a week why the separate merit list for madrasa students under C unit should not be declared illegal.

The HC bench of justice Syed Refat Ahmed and Iqbal Kabir issued the rule after hearing a writ petition filed by three JU admission seekers.

The university’s vice chancellor, registrar, chairman of academic council, secretary of admission committee and dean of arts and humanities faculty have been made respondents to the rule.

According to relevant laws, having a separate merit list for madrasa students is illegal, said Barrister Imran A Siddique, a lawyer for the petitioners.

Earlier, the university authorities published separate C unit results for madrasa and regular students for 2018-19 session admission tests.

Later, three admission seekers, also madrasa students, filed a writ petition on October 25.

JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam could not be reached for a comment in this regard.

Contacted, JU Acting Registrar Rahima Kaniz said, “We do not know anything in this matter. However, we will take legal steps if we get relevant orders from the court.”
