We will identify those who have unearned income
ACC chairman says
If any candidate of the national election gives false statement in affidavit, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) will take action against that person, said Iqbal Mahmood, chairman of the ACC.
“I don't think that people of our country will elect corrupt individuals. And if that happens, we, as per the law and with the help of everyone, will unearth the unearned income of the corrupt and unmask them in public,” he said.
Replying to a question on whether the commission will go for action against corrupt lawmakers of the next parliament, the ACC chief said, “Whoever it is -- be it a public official or a lawmaker, after the election we will identify and locate those who have unearned income. We will try to hunt them down, that's for sure.”
Mahmood made the remarks at a press briefing at ACC headquarters in Dhaka.
On November 5, Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) published a scorecard where Bangladesh was shown in “red zone” in controlling corruption.
Asked about it, the ACC chairman said he was not aware of the methodology applied by MCC.
“We are not accepting it nor refuting it. It is true that to control corruption we need cooperation from everyone. Does everyone assist us? I don't think so,” he said, adding that the ACC will look into the reason behind the failure to check corruption.
Pointing out that the ACC has made several recommendations involving corruption in some government organisations to the Cabinet Division, Mahmood called upon the government to implement their recommendations.
He claimed that the ACC has taken actions against officials who had been found involved in corrupt practices.
