‘Unite instead of doing politics over Rohingya crisis’
Nasim urges all parties
Awami League presidium member and former minister Mohammed Nasim yesterday called upon all political parties in the country to unite for solving the Rohingya crisis, instead of politicising the issue.
“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave the Rohingyas shelter considering humanitarian aspects… What we’re seeing now is an evil force initiating conspiracy centring the Rohingya issue,” said Nasim.
“I sincerely request the international community to put pressure on the Myanmar government for repatriation of the Rohingyas. Our country is too small and over-populated to accommodate them,” he added.
Nasim, also spokesperson of the 14-party alliance led by AL, made the remarks at a condolence meeting held at Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh auditorium in the capital.
The alliance organised the event in memory of Prof Muzaffar Ahmed -- an iconic political figure and Liberation War organiser -- who passed away at a hospital in Dhaka on August 23.
Nasim asked all not to do politics over the Rohingya crisis.
“We want to solve the Rohingya issue together through unity… I request all political parties to support the government for repatriation of the Rohingyas,” he added.
About Prof Muzaffar, Nasim said the late veteran politician was an icon in forging political unity, and made a significant contribution to the 14-party alliance.
Prof Muzaffar believed in non-communal politics and never compromised his principles, added Nasim. He also hoped that Prof Muzaffar’s party -- National Awami Party (NAP) -- as well as leftist politics would flourish in the country.
Speaking on the occasion, Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon said the ideologies, beliefs and the altruistic character of Prof Muzaffar are exemplary.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Jasad) President Hasanul Haq Inu said Prof Muzaffar was a true patriot and war hero. He always prioritised national interest over party interest.
Among others, Oikya NAP President Pankaj Bhattacharya, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) Advisor Manzurul Ahsan Khan and noted columnist and writer Syed Abul Maksud also spoke at the condolence meeting.
