Two killed in road accidents

Two people were killed and four others injured in road accidents in two districts yesterday, our correspondents report.

In Madaripur, a three-year-old girl was killed and four persons -- including her parents -- were injured as a truck hit a rickshaw-van on Dhaka-Barishal highway in Mostofapur area of Sadar upazila.

Laboni Akter, died instantly after she fell onto a road from her mother’s lap, said locals.

The injured were sent to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, while locals blocked the highway for an hour. Bodrul Alom Mollah, additional superintendent of police (Sadar Circle), said, “Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. We also seized the truck but the driver fled.”

In Gaibandha, a rickshaw-van puller was killed when a truck knocked his rickshaw-van over in Shahebganj of Gobindagnaj upazila on Dinajpur-Gobindagan highway.

Shafi Alam Babu, 25, died on the spot, said Gobindaganj Police Station Office-in-Charge Mehdi Hasan.

Soon after the incident, the truck fled the scene.
