Police yesterday raided a businessman’s residence in Narayanganj’s Rupganj upazila and seized 2,000 pieces of yaba pills, Tk 1.25 crore, and arrested him and two of his associates.

The arrestees are Jamal Hossain Mridha, 45, a mosquito coil businessman; Md Mostafa, 35, and Manik Mia, 36.

A team of detective branch (DB) of police raided his home in Rasulpur area early in the morning and made the arrest, said Mohammad Mizan, inspector of Narayanganj DB police.

On information that a large consignment of yaba would be delivered at Jamal’s residence, detectives beefed up vigilance in the area from Tuesday evening, he added. After the raid, Muhammad Harun-or-Rashid, district superintendent of police, visited the site.

Talking to journalists, the SP said Jamal claimed that he is the owner of three coil factories. But he could not produce any legal document in this regard.

Mizan said Jamal also could not show any legal source of the money. “After primary inquiry, it can be assumed that the cash was kept for laundering abroad. Furthermore, we suspect that he was involved in drug trade under the guise of selling coils,” the SP said.

Police will produce them at court and seek remand to dig out more information. Filing of three cases was underway.
