Three killed, five injured in road crashes

Three people were killed in separate road accidents across three districts yesterday, report our correspondents.

In Mymensingh Sadar upazila, at least two passengers of a CNG-run auto-rickshaw were killed and three others were injured in a road accident at Shambhuganj Rashidpur area on the Mymensingh-Netrakona road.

The deceased were identified as Babul Mia (42), of Darampasha in Sunamganj, and Ripon Mia (30) of Mohanganj upazila in Netrakona.

Quoting locals, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station Md Firoz Talukder said the accident took place around 3pm when a Netrakona-bound bus collided head-on with the auto-rickshaw, killing two passengers on the spot and injuring three others.

The injured passengers were immediately taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH), said the OC.

Police have seized the bus but its driver managed to flee the scene. A case has been lodged in this regard.

In Sirajganj, a van puller was killed when a speeding bus hit his van at the Hatikumrul intersection in Ullapara upazila.

Deceased Md Ashraful Islam (38) hailed from the upazila's Amdanga village.

Officer-in-Charge of Hatikumrul highway police Md Shajahan said the accident took place around 10am when Ashraful was crossing the Bonpara-Hatikumrul highway with his three wheeler. He died on the spot after the bus hit him.

The driver of the bus fled the scene with the vehicle, he added.

In Munshiganj, four people, including a pedestrian, were critically injured when a covered van fell off Muktarpur Bridge breaking its railing.

The injured have been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said Md Bazlur Rahman, inspector of Munshiganj Sadar Traffic Police.

The covered van fell from the bridge as its driver was trying to avoid an oncoming auto-rickshaw which suddenly changed its lane. The accident occurred around 10am, the official said.
