Three get death for murder in Rangpur

A Rangpur court yesterday sentenced three men to death and four to life imprisonment for killing a trader in Pirganj upazila in 2006.

The death row convicts are Md Bipu alias Dipu, Saiful Islam and Badal Mia while the life term convicts are Jahrul Islam, Shahanur Alam, Milon Mia and Mofazzal Hossain.

Judge Golam Rasul delivered the verdict in presence of three convicts, court sources said.

According to the prosecution, Ashraful Islam Bulu, a fertiliser trader of the upazila, was returning home after collecting dues on September 28. When he arrived at Khezmatpur village in Pirganj around 8pm, a gang stabbed him indiscriminately and snatched his motorcycle and Tk 45,000 in cash.

Locals rushed the man to Pirganj Upazila Health Complex. As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries after a couple of days.

His brother Amirul Islam filed a murder case with Pirganj Police Station a day after the incident. Police submitted a charge sheet against seven persons.
