Teacher, 2-yr-old daughter die in road accident

In another day of tragedy on the road, five people were killed and at least 24 injured in separate accidents across the country yesterday, report our district correspondents.

In Noakhali's Begumganj, school teacher Poly Rani Majumdar (37) and  her two-year-old daughter Mittika Dey Midi died after a pick-up van collided head-on with a CNG-run  auto-rickshaw carrying them.

Deceased Poly Rani was an assistant teacher of Alipur Government Primary School. Two school students  were also injured in the incident. Their identities could not be confirmed as of filing this report.

The accident occurred in Majumdarhat area around 9am,  locals said.

Chowmuhani Highway Police's SI Ripon said police have seized the pick-up and the CNG auto-rickshaw.

Meanwhile in Dinajpur, seven people of an upazila chairperson's  entourage were injured after the microbus carrying them fell into a  roadside ditch at Ambari area in Parbatipur upazila in the morning.

The  injured are Minfuzur Rahman, chairman of Kalai upazila; Talukdar  Belal, former mayor of Kalai municipality; Ali Akbar, chairman of  Ahmedabad Union under Kalai upazila; Ziaur Rahman, chairman of Zindapur  UP; Saiful Islam, joint convener of Kalai upazila BCL; Nayan Chowdhury,  GS of Udoypur AL; and driver Saifur Rahman.

They were taken to M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Police  said they were coming to Dinajpur from Joypurhat with JS Whip Abu  Sayeed Al Mahmood Swapon, also lawmaker of Joypurhat-2 and  organaisational secretary of AL, who was travelling in another vehicle.

In Faridpur, a bus driver was killed and 15 others were injured after a Dhaka-bound bus collided with a truck at Maligram Kolatola under Bhanga upazila.

Deceased Masud Mia (50) hailed from Patuakhali and worked as a driver for Mallik Paribahan.

Md Anish, SI of Bhanga Highway Police Station, said, "The accident occurred on the Dhaka-Khulna Highway around noon. The collision killed Masud on the spot. The injured were taken to Faridpur Medical College Hospital. Police seized the bus."

In Brahmanbaria, an on-duty police constable was killed after being run over by a speeding truck at Khariala bus stand under Ashuganj upazila in the afternoon.

The deceased is Syed Hossain (58) of Ashuganj Police Station.

Jabed Mahmud, OC of the station, said a team of police, including constable Hossain, were carrying out their night duty in the area from Ashuganj Toll-plaza to Bogoir bus stand. Around 4am, a speeding truck hit the victim and killed him on the spot.

In Jamalpur, Habibur Rahman Habu (70) was killed after being run over by a truck at Beltia Jangalpara area. The accident occurred as he was crossing a road around 1pm. Suddenly, a sand-laden truck hit him, leaving him dead on the spot, said Tariq Ahmed, SI of Sadar Police Station.

Police seized the truck but the driver managed to flee, said the SI.
