Taposh takes hard line on corruption
Two high officials of DSCC sacked on his first day as mayor
On the first day at work yesterday, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh said he would free the city corporation of corruption.
And true to his words, two high ranking officials of DSCC were terminated even before the day ended.
They are Additional Chief Engineer Mohammad Asaduzzaman and Deputy Chief Revenue Officer Mohammad Yusuf Ali Sarder, DSCC Secretary Akramuzzaman told reporters.
Allegations ran rife against the duo that they were involved in corruption and "commission business", confirmed DSCC officials wishing anonymity.
"They have been terminated already," said the secretary, adding that he has also heard about allegations against the two sacked officials.
Contacted, Yusuf Ali Sarder said he was unaware of the incident but the city corporation can decide what is best.
On the other hand, Asaduzzaman said he heard that he has been sacked but he does not know the reason yet.
'A CORRUPTION-FREE DSCC'
Meanwhile, the newly-elected mayor held the first meeting with the heads of the departments and zonal executive officers at Nagar Bhaban yesterday, a day after taking charge.
"Tough and immediate actions will be taken against employees and officials involved in corruption and those who are indifferent to their duties," the mayor said.
"Corrupt officials will be fired no matter how high post they hold," Taposh warned. The mayor also directed all officials and employees of DSCC to work with utmost honesty, dedication and with a mentality to provide service to people.
"I want to turn DSCC into a corruption free and proud organisation," he said. Taposh said they will follow the law, rules and guidelines to run the organisation effectively and hoped that all would come forward and support him in this regard.
DSCC Chief Executive Officer Shah Emdadul Haque and regional executive officers were present at the meeting.
HOMAGE TO BANGABANDHU
Earlier in the day, Taposh paid tribute to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing a wreath at Bangabandhu's portrait in front of the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi 32.
After placing the wreath, he stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of profound respect to the memory of Bangabandhu, the architect of Bangladesh's independence.
A number of local leaders and activists of Awami League and the DSCC CEO accompanied the mayor.
Taposh took over the responsibility of DSCC formally on Saturday as the five-year tenure of outgoing mayor Sayeed Khokon expired.
The newly-elected mayors and councillors of Dhaka north and south city corporations took oath for office on February 26, after they were elected in the election held on February 1. But they had to wait for more than three months until completion of the tenures of incumbent mayors.
Five-year tenure of the incumbent public representatives of DNCC expired on Wednesday while that of DSCC on Saturday.
Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam took charge for the second term on May 13.
