One killed, another injured as bus hits motorbike

A trader was killed and his co-rider injured when a bus hit their motorcycle in Tangail on Friday, reports our Tangail correspondent.

Badal Miah, 40, from Nagar Jalpai village died on the spot when the accident occurred on Dhaka-Tangail highway in Taratia area of Sadar upazila, said police.

Firefighters rushed to the spot and took injured Rihan Khan, 38, general secretary of Bhatkura Traders Association, to Tangail General Hospital, said Abdur Razzak, station officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence, Tangail.

After the accident, angry locals kept the busy highway blocked for about an hour, causing a long tailback on both sides of the road, said locals.

The protesters withdrew the blockade after a police team rushed to the spot and assured them of taking necessary actions against those responsible for the

accident, said Saidur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Tangail Model Police Station.

The bus was seized but its driver and his helpers managed to flee, he added.

Our Savar correspondent adds, two people were killed and three others injured when a speeding truck hit a rickshaw and pedestrians on Baipail-Abdullahpur road in Itakhola area in Ashulia on the same day.

Rickshaw-puller Md Masud, 30, from Naogaon Damurhat; and Moushumi Akter, 22, from Bagerhat, died instantly, said police.

The injured were taken to a local hospital.

Police seized the truck but could not arrest its driver and helper, said Javed Masud, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Ashulia Police Station.
