Take action against those destroying environment

Says Minister Shahab Uddin at Sylhet tree plantation programme

Environment, Forests and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin yesterday directed authorities concerned to take action against those destroying environment by cutting hills and filling rivers and canals.

He was inaugurating Sylhet Divisional Tree Fair and Tree Plantation Campaign on Alia Madrasa premises in the city’s Chowhatta area.

The minister said there is an adverse impact on the environment due to global warming, and there is no alternative to tree plantation to stop it.

He said people are becoming more aware of harmful effects of polythene bags.

At the inaugural programme, the minister distributed cheques for Tk 77 lakh among those involved in government tree plantation projects at different times.

The minister also handed over saplings to around 1,000 students from several educational institutions.

Acting Deputy Commissioner  of Sylhet Meer Mahbubur Rahman presided over the programme.

Dr Belal Uddin Ahmed, chairman of forest and environmental science faculty of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, among others, was present on the ocassion.
