Syndicate approves suspension of 69 DU students

The Dhaka University syndicate at a meeting last night approved its disciplinary board’s recommendation of suspending 69 students over their involvement in question paper leak during admission tests.

The university authorities will also issue a show-cause notice to these students, authorities said.

If they fail to respond to the notice within seven working days, they will be expelled.

All the suspended students were enrolled between 2012-2013 and 2017-2018 sessions, two syndicate members confirmed to The Daily Star.

Earlier on August 6 this year, the disciplinary board -- comprising the vice-chancellor, deans, provosts and the proctor -- made the recommendation during a meeting.

Contacted, DU Vice Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman told this newspaper they will take further actions following the recommendations.

DU Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani said they will send letters to the students’  permanent addresses, hall offices and respective departments to let them know about the suspension.

On June 23, Criminal Investigation Department of police pressed charges against 125 people, including 87 DU students, under the Public Examinations Act and the Information and Communication Technology Act.

Three days later, a Dhaka court issued arrest warrants for 78 of the 125 accused in a case filed over their alleged involvement in question paper leak of DU “Gha” unit admission test in 2017.

The CID had arrested 47 of the 125 suspects, including the alleged mastermind, Alip Kumar Biswas, a suspended assistant director of Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan, at different times.

Most of them are now out on bail.
