Swechchhasebak League Confce: Activists scuffle over seating arrangement

Followers of two aspirants for the president position of Awami Swechchhasebak League’s Dhaka north city unit locked in altercation and threw plastic chairs at each other at the organisation’s conference in the capital.

The chaotic situation -- reportedly over establishing supremacy -- arose before the conference started at Krishibid Institution Auditorium, said activists of the organisation.

They said followers of Swechchhasebak League’s Dhaka north unit general secretary Faridur Rahman Khan and former Dhaka north unit Chhatra League president Ishak Miah created the chaos at around 11:10am.

Faridur Rahman and Ishak Miah are frontrunners for the president position of the Dhaka north city unit of Swechchhasebak League.

At one point, senior leaders of the organisation brought the situation under control.

Faridur Rahman Khan and Ishak Miah were both unavailable for comments.

Officer-in-charge of Tejgaon Police Station, Shamimur Rashid Talukdar, said the altercation happened centring seating arrangement but senior leaders brought the situation under control without police’s intervention.

Around 12pm Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader inaugurated the conference as chief guest.

Quader at the conference said names of the top leaders would be announced from organisation’s central council on November 16.

Dhaka north unit of Swechchhasebak League held its last conference in May, 2006.

Among others, incumbent vice presidents Golam Rabbani and Shafiqul Islam, joint general secretaries Afrose Habib and Habibur Rahman Panna, were aspirants for the position of the president of the new committee.

Incumbent organisation secretary AKM Monwarul Islam, publicity secretary Dulal Hossain, former Government Titumir College unit Chatra League president Amzad Hossain and others are vying for the general secretary position.

Meanwhile, several city dwellers who were around the conference venue said several groups of Swechchhasebak League activists forced them to wear badges, wishing success of the council.
