Students go on rampage after fellow dies

Three persons were killed in separate road accidents in Cox’s Bazar, Manikganj and Rajbari yesterday and Monday.

In Cox’s Bazar, a youth, who passed Dakhil examination from Eidgaon Shah Jabbaria Dakhil Madrasa this year, was killed and three school students were injured, when a motorcycle they were riding collided head-on with a bus yesterday, said police and witnesses.

Students and locals set fire to the bus of Hanif Paribahan after the accident at Collage Gate in Eidgaon area around 10am.

Asif Kamal Imran, 17, son of Abu Taher from Eidgaon area in the district, was declared dead at a nearby clinic.

The injured -- Shamim, Joynal, and Rahul, all 18-year-olds -- are students of Eidgaon Adarsha Shikkha Niketan school.

Shamim and Rahul were shifted to different hospitals in critical condition. Joynal left the clinic after primary treatment.

When other students of the school came to know of the incident, they went on a rampage.They burned rubber tyres on Cox’s Bazar-Chattogram highway in protest, resulting in a long tailback on the road.

A police team rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control in an hour, said Md Asaduzzaman, in-charge of Eidgaon police investigation centre. Police seized the gutted bus.

In Manikganj, a construction worker was killed, when a pickup van ran him over on the Dhaka-Aricha highway in Golora area of Saturia upazila early yesterday morning.

The deceased was identified as Sohel Hossain, 16, son of Amez Uddin from Jagir Meghshimul area in Sadar upazila.

Golara Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Lutfar Rahman told The Daily Star that the construction worker died on the spot in the accident, that took place around 8am.

He was standing in front of Akij Tobacco factory gate to board a bus to go to his workplace.

Police seized the vehicle but its driver managed to flee, he said.

The body of the deceased was sent to Manikganj District Hospital morgue for autopsy, the OC added.

Meanwhile in Rajbari, a middle-aged man was killed after a bus hit a bicycle he was riding on in Goalanda Bazar area of Dhaka-Khulna highway on Monday evening.

The deceased was identified as Sanjoy Kumar Roy, 42, son of Rajat Chandra Roy from Goalanda upazila.

The accident took place around 7:45pm, when the bus hit the bicycle from behind while Sanjoy was going to his house from a nearby bazar, said Md Mizanur Rahman, Alhadipur Highway Police Station sub-inspector, quoting locals.

Sanjoy was rushed to Goalanda Upazila Health Complex by locals, where doctors declared him dead.
