Affiliated Colleges: DU students demand dissociation
Amid the Dhaka University (DU) authorities’ move to strengthen its affiliation with seven colleges, a group of DU students yesterday demanded dissociation of the colleges from the university.
They staged demonstration on the campus and later submitted a memorandum to Vice-Chancellor (VC) Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman.
In the memorandum, the students urged the DU authorities to cancel the affiliation from the upcoming session 2019-20 as they are failing to manage the huge number of students from seven colleges and DU’s regular students together.
Earlier, the students under the banner of “Dhaka Bishwabidyalayer Sadharan Shikhharthibrindo” held a demonstration rally at Raju sculpture near Teacher-Student Centre (TSC).
Speaking at the rally, coordinator of the platform, Ahmed Munir Taif, an honour’s final year student of theatre and performance studies department, alleged that the university administration is delaying the publication of their own students’ results. “So, how will they continue academic activities of seven affiliated colleges?” he questioned.
He claimed that these colleges should be dissociated from the university to eliminate the crisis.
Earlier on Sunday night, the DU authorities at a meeting chaired by the VC took some initiatives to meet the demands of the students of the affiliated colleges who were in a movement since April 23.
The decisions include -- arranging special examinations to avoid session jam, early publishing of results and introducing academic calendar soon.
The students who fail in at least two subjects will be promoted, but they will have to pass those subjects through improvement/special exams before attending the final exams of next year, said a DU press release yesterday.
When asked about the issue, DU VC said that not only these seven colleges but also 160 institutions have affiliation with DU and most of their work is completed at their own campuses.
“We will not continue any activities that hamper DU’s academic processes,” he added.
