Student Forced Out of Exam: Review committee submits report to Jagannath univ VC

A review committee -- for further investigating an allegation against a student of Jagannath University (JnU) for causing an untoward situation in class in April this year -- submitted the probe report to the authorities yesterday.

“I gave the probe report to the university authorities yesterday,” said JnU history department Prof Mohammad Salim, the sole member of the committee who was assigned on November 26 to investigate the allegation against Mahmudul Hasan Mishu, a student of film and television department.

He said, “The university authorities sent  another letter on Wednesday, seeking an observation on academic activities of the department. I also gave the authorities an observation with the probe report,” he said.

Contacted, Vice Chancellor Mijanur Rahman told The Daily Star yesterday, “I got the report from the review committee. Authorities will take the next step following the report’s recommendations on Sunday.”

Multiple sources told this correspondent that the review committee has upheld recommendations of the earlier probe body, which said Mishu could take part in classes.

On May 22, Prof Junaid Ahmed Halim, chairman of film and television department, filed a complaint, saying Mishu on April 9 created an untoward situation in class.

On October 22, a probe body consisting two assistant proctors -- Md Mohiuddin and Shilpi Rani Saha -- recommended that authorities exempt Mishu from the charges.

JnU Registrar Md Ohiduzzaman issued an office order on November 17 to this end.

Following the order, Mishu went to his department on November 17 to sit for his fourth-semester final examination, but was forced out of the examination hall by Prof Halim, said witnesses.

Mishu could not participate in classes and exams due to Prof Halim’s “vendetta”, several students of film and television department told this correspondent.

Contacted after the incident, Prof Halim had said the letter that cleared the allegations against Mishu was “not acceptable”. He however, did not respond to the question whether he forced the student out of the exam hall.
