Step forward for Char people: Shakib

Top Bangladeshi cricketer Shakib Al Hasan has called upon people from all walks of life to stand beside people of chars and climate-impacted areas, marginalised and deprived of fundamental rights due to their proximity to the coast.

"We are still a developing country, and we all need to come together for the welfare of these marginalised people," he said at the launching of a campaign of Friendship, a non-government organisation (NGO).

The campaign, titled 'Heroes and Friends' was launched yesterday through a virtual press conference.

Shakib said he had no idea about the difficulties faced by the people of Char areas. "They are deprived of basic facilities that city people have easy access to," he said.

Runa Khan, Founder Executive Director of Friendship, said their work is linked with managing disasters.
