Six get death for killing govt officer in 2009

A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced six persons to death for the murder of Aminul Haque alias Anis Khadem, an administrative officer of Dhaka Divisional Commissioner’s Office, in May 2009.

The convicts are: Shahidur Rahman Khadem, Mahbub Alam Liton, Sheikh Shamim Ahmed, Md Jewel, Kamal Hossain Biplob and Sohel.

Two other accused are: Abdullah Md Nazim Uddin Babu and Ajgor Hossain Rana. Babu was given life in jail while Rana was acquitted as the charge brought against him could not be proved.

Liton, Biplob and Babu are absconding while five others were present at the court yesterday.

The punishment of the fugitives will be effective from the day of their arrest or surrender and the convicts can file appeals with the High Court within 30 days from the receipt of the judgement copy.

Judge Abdur Rahman Sardar of Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 of Dhaka handed down the sentence in presence of five of the accused at a packed courtroom.

Earlier, the prosecution and the defence had completed their arguments and the tribunal recorded statements of 17 prosecution witnesses including complainant of the case.

Aminul was shot to death near Dhaka’s Malibagh Shahi Masjid on May 4, 2009.

The government officer had been serving as the general secretary of Kharampur Mazar Committee (shrine committee) in Brahmanbaria’s Akhaura. 

According to the case, Shahidur Rahman ordered the killing of Aminul following a spat over the ownership of properties in the shrine.

Aminul’s son Saidul Haque Khadem filed a murder case with Motijheel Police Station the day after he was killed. 

During the investigation, all eight accused confessed to the killing to magistrates on different dates.

On December 30 of 2009, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) pressed charges against the eight accused and the tribunal framed charges against them on June 8, 2014.
