SI suspended over rape allegation

Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) has suspended a Sub-inspector (SI) of Bayezid Police Station after a rape allegation surfaced against him on November 6.

According to the allegation, SI Yaar Hossain raped a housewife threatening to implicate her husband, a tailor by profession, in a yaba case on October 18 at her residence in port city's Karnaphuli area.

After the incident, the woman allegedly took liquid toilet cleaner to take her own life on October 28. She is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

Mizanur Rahman, additional deputy commissioner (north) of CMP, who is investigating the incident, said, “SI Yaar Hossain was suspended on November 10 for sake of fair investigation.”

“I have already recorded the SI's version and asked the victim's husband to come to my office with his wife to give their statement,” said the ADC. He said he recorded the landlord's version yesterday.

According to the allegation, an uncle of the police official introduced him to the husband in Dhaka. At that time, Yaar was posted in Dhaka and had been transferred to Chattogram a few days later. The SI offered the husband to manage a tailoring shop in port city.

The tailor and his wife moved to port city on September 15.

The husband, who filed a complaint against the SI with the deputy commissioner (north) of CMP, said Yaar went to his house a couple of days later and requested him to allow the SI to reside there for a few days until he could rent one.

On October 18, the SI, threatening to implicate the husband in a yaba case, “raped” her. During the incident, her husband was asleep, the complaint read.

After the incident, she did not disclose the matter to her husband and the SI “raped” her again a few days later.

The husband said he rebuked his wife after the incident. But she told him that the SI forced her to do so, saying that he would be implicated in a yaba case. “After being scolded, she took toilet cleaner to commit suicide,” he said.

Contacted, SI Yaar brushed aside the allegation, saying that both the husband and wife were “fraudsters”.
