‘She just wanted to watch cartoon on his phone’

All Nupur wanted was to watch cartoon. But her elder brother, Sohan, was watching something else on television and did not want to change the channel.

So, the eight-year-old went to her father and asked for his phone so she could watch her favourite show on the device.

But he refused. Frustrated, Nupur started shouting, which infuriated Nur Mohammad.

He screamed at her and at one stage, strangled her to death. Nur hanged the body from the ceiling to make it look like suicide.

The above incident took place on April 3 last year in Nilphamari's Saidpur upazila, found a probe of Police Bureau of Investigation.

PBI officials said police have arrested the father recently.

Nur gave a confessional statement to the court yesterday, said ABM Zakir Hossain, superintendent of police of PBI in Rangpur. The court later sent him to Nilphamari jail.

In a press release, PBI officials said Nur lived in a rented house in Rasulpur area with his family. They said over the death of the girl, an unnatural death case was filed with Saidpur Police Station last year.  

As police failed to uncover the incident, the case was handed over to PBI in Rangpur.   During investigation, the PBI officials quizzed Nur and he admitted to his involvement in killing his daughter, the press release added.
