Serniabat unofficially declared BCC mayor

Awami League-nominated candidate Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah was unofficially declared mayor in the Barishal City Corporation election held on July 30.

Mujibur Rahman, returning officer of the election, declared the result yesterday at his office in Barishal city.

He also announced re-election schedule for nine centres under 6 wards of the BCC.

According to the Election Commission (EC), Serniabat received 1,11,956 votes in 114 centres out of 123 centres while the nearest contender, BNP-nominated Mujibur Rahman Sarwar, bagged 13,776 votes.

In this BCC election, a total of 1,39,151 votes (62 percent) were cast.

On the election day, vote casting at 15 centres was postponed and voting was cancelled in one centre.

A probe committee of the EC investigated alleged irregulates in 41 centres. The probe committee submitted its report on Monday (October 1).
