Scholarships awarded to descendants of freedom fighters

India awarded scholarships to 2200 descendants of freedom fighters to commemorate the invaluable contributions of freedom fighters towards the liberation of Bangladesh.

The scholarships were distributed among selected candidates at a function organised by the High Commission of India at its chancery yesterday.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan attended the function as chief guest, and GOC-in-C Eastern Command of the Indian Army was the guest of honour.  Senior officers from Bangladesh Armed Forces, freedom fighters, and senior officials from Ministry of Liberation War Affairs also attended the programme.

The Government of India started “Muktijoddha Scholarship” in 2006.

The new “India Bangladesh Maitree Muktijoddha Sontan Scholarship” was announced by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi when Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited India in April 2017. This scheme has been in effect since 2018.

The two schemes are concurrently being implemented, and up till now 12,957 students have been awarded scholarships worth Tk 23.66 crores.

10,000 students will receive scholarships over the next five years and Tk 35 crores will be utilised for this purpose.
