SC scraps bail of Abdul Mannan

The Supreme Court yesterday scrapped a High Court verdict that granted bail to New Bashundhara Real Estate Limited's Managing Director Abdul Mannan Talukdar and ordered him to surrender to a lower court concerned in two weeks in connection with a money laundering case involving Tk 110 crore.

The apex court also upheld its chamber judge's order, which stayed an HC order that granted bail to Anisur Rahman, chairperson of New Bashundhara Real Estate Limited located in Bagerhat, in the same case.

A full bench of the Appellate Division of the SC, headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, passed the orders following two separate leave to appeal petitions filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), challenging the HC verdict and order.

ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan told The Daily Star that the commission filed the case with Bagerhat Sadar Police Station on May 30, 2018 against Anisur, Mannan and few others for laundering Tk 110 crore.

Following their petitions, the HC on different dates last year granted bail to Anisur and Mannan.

The Appellate Division on April 25 ordered Anisur to surrender to lower court. He is in jail now, lawyer Khusrhid said.

Lawyers Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal and Ashraf Ali appeared for Anisur and Mannan during virtual hearing of the petitions.
