RU BCL suspends leader for assaulting journalist

A leader of Rajshahi University (RU) unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) has been suspended from the student organisation for a month yesterday, for assaulting a campus reporter last year.

Subrun Zamil Sushmoy was a master’s student of Social Work dept, and an organising secretary of RU BCL.

On December 1, 2018, Sushmoy beat up Ali Younus Hridoy, a final-year student of Mass Communication and Journalism. Hridoy was a correspondent for the Daily Khola Kagoj, and general secretary of RU Reporters’ Unity at the time.

Sushmoy assaulted Hridoy when he was covering an incident in front of the university’s Kazi Nazrul Islam Auditorium.

Around 60 journalists working on the campus protested the incident the next day, and demanded that Sushmoy be expelled.

Yesterday the BCL leader was suspended for one month. “This should serve as a warning to all of our members. They should avoid such incidents in the future,” said RU BCL President Golam Kibria.

Ali Younus Hridoy said, “I expected that central BCL would take more severe action, but I am still glad that RU BCL has suspended Sushmoy for a month.”
