'Robber' shot dead by homeowner

2 'cattle lifters' beaten to death

An alleged robber died and one of his associates was injured in an exchange of fire with a homeowner, while attempting to commit robbery at his house in Tongibari upazila of Munshiganj early yesterday.

The homeowner's son also suffered bullet injuries during the incident, said police, adding that they are yet to identify the deceased.

Talking to our Munshiganj correspondent, Shah Mohammad Awlad Hossain, officer-in-charge of Tongibari Police Station, said a group of eight to 10 robbers attempted to rob the house of Golam Kabir Labu Sikdar, a freedom fighter, in Outshahi area around 1:30am.

“Golam's son Konu Shikdar, 35, engaged in a scuffle with the robbers when they broke into the house. At one stage, Golam opened fire with his licenced pistol. In retaliation, the robbers fired back and left the scene,” the OC added.

Police recovered the body from a nearby marsh around noon and arrested the injured robber, Mohammad Idris, 38, he said, adding that they also recovered four sharp weapons. Konu and Idris were admitted to DMCH.

In Gazipur, two suspected cattle lifters were beaten to death by a mob in Kaliakoir in the morning.
