Road crashes kill five

Five people were killed in road accidents in two districts yesterday, according to reports from our correspondents.

In Chattogram, helper of a pickup driver was killed under the wheel of the very vehicle in the city’s Eidgaon area early yesterday.

The deceased -- Md Shakil, 18, from the city’s Pahartali -- was asleep under the parked vehicle which the driver did not know, said Double Mooring Police Station Sub-Inspector Harun-uz-Zaman.

The accident took place when the driver started the truck and drove him over, the SI said.

The truck driver fled the scene, he said, adding that they seized the vehicle and sent the body to Chittagong Medical College morgue for autopsy. 

In Sadarghat area of the city, a rickshaw-van puller was killed as a car hit the rickshaw-van around 12:30pm.

The deceased was identified as Md Babul, 26, from Kachua in Chandpur, said police.

He was declared dead at Chittagong Medical College Hospital, said Assistant Sub-Inspector Alauddin Talukder of CMCH Police Camp.

Police seized the microbus but the driver managed to flee, he said.

Earlier in the day, a man was killed as he was run over by a microbus in Mirsarai upazila of the district, said the police officer.

Identity of the deceased could not be known immediately, he said.

In Bagerhat, two pedestrians were killed as a bus ran them over on Khulna-Bagerhat highway in front of Circuit House in Dashani area of Sadar upazila.

The deceased were identified as Mona Begum, 65, from Dema village in the upazila; and Rani, 5, daughter of Ali Azam Khan from Badamtala area of the upazila, said Bagerhat Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Harun-ar-Rashid.
