Road crashes kill five

Five people were killed and two others injured in road accidents in three districts during the last two days, according to reports from our correspondents.

In Dinajpur, two truck drivers were killed and their helpers injured, as a pickup truck hit another truck parked on Dinajpur-Rangpur highway in Sadar upazila yesterday.

Golam Mostafa, 51, from Dogachhi village in Joypurhat; and Shahidul Islam, 48, succumbed to their injuries at M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital in Dinajpur.

Their helpers -- Swadin, 28, and Belal Hossain -- were undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The accident occurred at Jamtoli village where Mostafa and Belal were changing a damaged tire of their truck, said police.

In Tangail, two youths were killed when a motorcycle they were riding hit a tree beside Hakimpur-Jasihati road in Taltala area of Basail upazila on Saturday night.

Shawon Khan, 27, and Jamil Hossain, 25, from Kamutia village, died on the spot.

In Savar, a man was killed as a bus ran him over in Anarkoli area yesterday.

The deceased -- Mannan Majhi, 60 -- was from Ramdashur village in Bhola.

The accident took place in the morning while the man was crossing CNB-Ashulia Bazar road.

Angry locals seized the bus after a chase but the driver and his helper managed to flee.

Police later seized the vehicle, said Javed Masud, inspector (investigation) of Ashulia Police Station.
