Road accidents take five lives

Five people including two children were killed in road accidents in four districts yesterday, according to reports from our correspondents.

In Tangail, two people were killed when a train hit a battery-run auto-rickshaw at a level crossing in Hatia area of Kalihati upazila.

The accident occurred around 5pm, leaving the driver of the three-wheeler and its lone passenger dead on spot, said Mosharaf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Bangabandhu Bridge East Police Station.

Identities of the deceased could not be known immediately, he said.

In Dinajpur, a fifth-grader was killed as a tractor hit him in Laxmanpur village of Parbatipur upazila.

Nitai Chandra, 12, son of Tapash Chandra from Gouripara village in the upazila, died on the spot, said police.

Nitai was a student of Raghunathpur Government Primary School.

In Madaripur, a child was killed as a nosimon (locally assembled three-wheeler) hit him on Tekerhat-Kabirajpur road in Satyabati area of Rajoir upazila.

Jonayet Sheikh, 5, son of Atiar Sheikh of Satyabati, was declared dead at Rajoir Upazila Health Complex, said police.

Police seized the vehicle but the driver managed to flee.

In Faridpur, a man was killed as a bus hit him from behind on Dhaka-Khulna highway in Gangabordi area of Sadar upazila.

Kamruzzaman alias Ratan, 45, from Durlabpur village in Jhenaidah, died instantly, said police. Police seized the bus but the driver fled.
