Road accidents kill five

At least five people were killed in road accidents across the country in the last two days, our correspondents report.

In Faridpur, two people were killed when two motorbikes collided head-on in Zajirakandi area in Sadarpur upazila around 9am yesterday.

The deceased are Abul Kalam Azad, 53, and Mina Hawladar, 56.

Quoting locals, police said Abul and Mina were going to a local market on a motorbike. At that time, another motorbike collided with them and fled.

Locals rushed the two to Faridpur Medical Collage Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared them dead.

Police are trying to catch the other motorcyclist.

In Khulna, university student Anika Kumkum, 22, was killed after she fell off a motorbike and a bus hit her, in front of Khulna University yesterday evening, said police, quoting locals.

After the incident, students halted traffic movement on the road in protest. Police later brought the situation under control.

Her body was sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital for autopsy. Police seized the bus but its driver managed to flee.

In Kishoreganj, Asma Begum, a mother of three, was killed after a bus hit her in Bhairab municipal area on Mymensingh-Bhairab road around 1:30pm yesterday.

Quoting locals, police said Asma fell off a battery-run auto-rickshaw, and a bus hit her, leaving her dead on the spot.

Police seized the bus but its driver managed to flee. A case was lodged with Bhairab Police Station.

In Gopalganj, Emdadul Haque Mollah, 46, Fukra union parishad chairman, was killed after he lost control of his motorbike and fell into a pond in Fukra union of Kashiani upazila on Wednesday.

Quoting locals, police said after the accident, Emdadul was seriously injured. He was rushed to Gopalganj General Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
