Road accidents kill eight, injure nine

At least eight people were killed and nine injured in road accidents across the country in the last two days, according to reports from our correspondents and news agencies.

In Madaripur, three people were killed and one was injured in two separate accidents in Kalkini and Shibchar upazilas yesterday.

 In Kalkini, two people were killed and one was injured when a bus of Sugandha Paribahan hit a rickshaw-van at Kornopara area on Dhaka-Barishal highway.

The deceased are Motaleb Matubbbar, 60, from Minajdi area in Kalkini municipality; and Ummani Begum, 52, from Maizpara village of the upazila.

Locals said Motaleb and Ummani were travelling on the rickshaw-van. Motaleb died on the spot.

The puller and Ummani were seriously injured and were rushed to Madaripur General Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared Ummani dead. The puller was later sent to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.

After the incident, locals blocked the highway for one and a half hours but police brought the situation under control.

Badrul Alom, additional superintendent of police in Madaripur, said police seized the bus but the driver fled the scene.

In Shibchar, a rickshaw-van puller was killed when a truck hit his vehicle at Hazi Shoriatullah bridge area on Dhaka-Khulna highway.

The deceased is Zakir Fakir, 35, from Bablatola area of the upazila.

Quoting locals, police said the trucker had lost control of his vehicle and hit the van, killing the puller on the spot. Police seized the truck but the driver fled the scene, they added.

In Pirojpur, a man was killed when a bus collided with his motorbike at Charkhola village on Pirojur-Nazirpur-Gopalganj road yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Md Tanvir Hasan, 42.

Witnesses said he was critically injured, and was rushed to a local health complex where doctors declared him dead.

Police seized the bus but the driver fled the scene.

In Rangpur, a man was killed and two others were injured after a car hit their motorbike at Muchirbazar village in Pirgachha upazila yesterday.

The deceased is Nazmul Hossain, 40.

Quoting witnesses, police said Nazmul died on the spot. Pillion passengers Alamin and Nahid Islam were injured, and were taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

The car driver fled the scene with the vehicle.

A police constable was killed when a passenger bus ran over his motorbike in Bandarban town on Saturday.

The deceased is Imran Khan Jony, 24. He was working under Bandarban district police.

Critically injured Jony was rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital where he died later.

Police arrested bus driver Saiful and seized the vehicle.

In Bogura, an army sergeant was killed and six were injured after a bus overturned at Rahobol area on Rangpur-Bogura highway in Shibganj upazila on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Aziz, 35. He was posted in Bandarban.

The bus overturned around 7am, killing Aziz on the spot. Locals took the injured to a local health complex, and police seized the bus.

In Faridpur, a man was killed when a bus of Shohag Paribahan ran over his motorbike at Komorpur on Dhaka-Khulna highway.

The deceased is Ershad Mollah, 28. He was killed on the spot, said police, quoting locals.

Later, Rab personnel seized the bus and arrested its driver from Goalanda area in Rajbari, they added.
