Road accidents claim 8 lives

At least eight people were killed and three injured in road accidents across the country in the last two days, report our correspondents and news agencies. 

In Bagerhat, four-year-old Mahia was killed on the spot after a speeding truck hit her in front of Gowalmath Girls' School on Bagerhat-Pirojpur highway yesterday.

The accident occurred while Mahia was crossing the road holding her mother's hand, said Officer-in-Charge Shariful Haq of Kachua Police Station.

The truck driver fled the scene after the accident, he said.

In Kishoreganj, Mohor Uddin (35), a farmer, was killed after a motorbike hit him IN Dhekia area of Hossainpur upazila around 11am yesterday, reports our Mymensingh correspondent.

Police said the accident occurred while Mohor was crossing the road, leaving him critically injured.

Locals rescued and rushed him to the upazila health complex.  Doctors referred him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) as his condition deteriorated.

He died at MMCH in the afternoon.

Soon after the incident, police detained motorbike rider Rifat (17) and seized the bike. A case was lodged.

In Sylhet city, rickshaw-puller Rafiqul Islam was killed on the spot after a truck hit his rickshaw in Surma Market area around 7:30am yesterday morning, said police. 

On information, police recovered the body and sent it to MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

In Rajshahi, two people were killed on the spot and three injured after a pickup truck crashed into a stationary truck at Razabari intersection of Godagari upazila around 8am yesterday, said police.

One of the deceased is Zahidul Islam (18). The other could not yet be identified.

The injured were taken to the upazila health complex.

In Narail Sadar upazila, a 60-year-old man was killed after a bus ran him over in Muldai area around 7:30pm yesterday, said police.

Identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.

The accident left the man critically injured. Locals took him to Narail Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead. Police seized the bus but its driver managed to flee, they added.

In Gaibandha, a woman and her daughter were killed after a bus and  truck collided on Rangpur-Bogura highway in Gobindaganj upazila around  11:30pm on Tuesday, said witnesses.

The deceased are Rahela Begum and Shefali Begum.

The  two were critically injured after the accident.

Rahela succumbed to her  injuries while they were being taken to Palashbari Hospital.

Shefali died yesterday morning, said police.
