Registrar jailed for recording child marriage in Rajshahi

A mobile court sentenced a registrar to six months' imprisonment for recording a child marriage in Bagmara upazila of Rajshahi on Saturday.

The convict is Rezaul Karim, 56, said Nasim Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Bagmara Police Station.

The mobile court of Bagmara Upazila Nirbahi Officer Zakiul Islam also jailed the groom from Natore for one month.

The UNO said he called the marriage registrar and groom following a complaint of the girl's father.

The groom took the 15-year-old girl from Manikganj and went to the marriage registrar on October 23.

Rezaul recorded the marriage showing the bride's age as 18 although she was 15 while the groom's 21 although he was 19 in exchange for Tk 17,000, the UNO said.
