Re-election held at nine BCC centres

Following irregularities in the July 30 election to Barishal City Corporation (BCC), re-voting was held at nine centres under six wards yesterday.

The polling happened peacefully without any major disruption, except for the illegal entry of a youth into Barishal City College centre under ward 17.

Executive Magistrate Dipok Chandra Roy penalised the youth, Iqbal Hossain, aged around 25, by fining him Tk 10,000 for the offence.

Meanwhile, Returning Officer Mujibur Rahaman expressed satisfaction at the overall situation. “We have visited almost all centres and have not found any irregularities. Voter turnout was also satisfactory,” he said.

Under the six wards, there were 16,945 voters. The number of votes cast and the results were not available till filing of this report at 9:00pm.

Different law enforcement agencies including Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB), police, Ansars were deployed alongside nine magistrates at the nine centres.

The re-election was held only to the councillor posts. The Election Commission (EC) has already published the gazette notification for the winning mayor and councillors in 31 wards, said the returning officer.
