A heavy rainfall inundated many areas of the capital Dhaka in knee-deep water today, causing immense suffering to the city dwellers.

Beginning this morning, the rain came down hard around 12:30pm and continued for around two hours.

Meanwhile, gridlock on the city’s roads and streets brought the double blow with the acute waterlogging that again exposed the poor drainage system.

Roads and lanes of Rajarbagh, Paltan, Nayapaltan, Motijheel, Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue, Tejturibazar, Karwan Bazar, Monipuri para, Kazipara, Begum Rokeya Sarani and many low-laying areas were inundated due to the rain.

Many commuters were seen facing shortage of public transport to reach their destinations.

The Met office recorded 48mm rain between 12:00pm and 2:00pm in Dhaka, Meteorologist Abdur Rahman told The Daily Star Online.

Slight to moderate rainfall is now occurring in many parts over the country including Rangpur, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Chottogram, Barishal and Khulna, he said.

The flow of the rain may decrease within in a day or two, Meteorologist Rahman added.
