Prof Laila Nur passes away

Prof Laila Nur, a Language Movement activist and former teacher of Cumilla Victoria College, passed away at a clinic in Cumilla town yesterday, three days after she suffered a cardiac arrest. She was 84 years old. 

She was laid to rest in the town’s Gazibari graveyard, following a namaz-e-janaza at Dhormpur Jame Mosque.

Laila Nur was born on October 5, 1934 in Daudkandi upazila of Cumilla.

She was arrested -- along with about 20 other female students -- by the then Pakistan police for participating in the Language Movement.

She was also sentenced to jail for 21 days.

In 1956, she obtained the Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Dhaka University.

In 2014, Prof Laila Nur was awarded for her contributions to the Language Movement.
