Prisoner 'dies by suicide' in Barishal Central Jail

A prisoner allegedly died by suicide in Barishal Central Jail yesterday, authorities said.

The deceased, Kabir Sikder, 40, of Pirojpur district, was serving a 10-year jail term in connection with a theft case. 

“He hung himself with a towel in the kitchen of the jail around 2pm,”said Proshanta Kumar Banik, Superintendent of the jail.

Spotted by other prisoners, jail authorities rescued Kabir and sent him to Barishal Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival, the jail superintendent added.

Kabir was transferred to Barishal Central Jail from Bhola district jail on July 2 last year, Proshanta Kumar Banik also said.
