Port city residents take oath to fight drugs, corruption

Several thousand people yesterday took an oath to rid the port city of the menace of drugs, corruption, dowry, and militancy.

They took the oath at a rally organised by the Law and Order Standing Committee of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) at Laldighi ground.

CCC Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin recited the oath to participants at the event. People from all strata of life took part in the programme. They also vowed to fight the problems together.

Nasir, also the city unit general secretary of Awami League, said, “The vision for a developed country could be jeopardised by the aggression of drugs which is devastating our youths.”

Mayor Nasir also said he wants city dwellers to be aware of the consequences of engaging in drug trade, militancy and dowry and help in the fight to eliminate them.

Jamal Uddin Ahmed, director general of the department of narcotics control, said at least 300 parents were killed by drug addicted sons in recent years.

“A neighbouring country is earning billions of dollars each year by destroying our youths,” he lamented. He hoped Chattogram will lead the fight against narcotics.

The rally was also attended by councillors of 41 wards in the port city. HM Sohel, president of the Law and Order Standing Committee of CCC, chaired the programme.

Mayor Nasir said he has been working relentlessly to implement the commitment of the prime minister, who promised to turn Bangladesh into a developed country by 2041.
