Five days have passed since vandals attacked a building of Gonoshasthaya Kendra in Savar and beat up students and staff, but police are yet to register a case in this connection.

On October 26, around 100 people entered the PHA Bhaban in the morning and started breaking windows, doors and looted office equipment.

Vandals also broke right arm of Limon Hossain, a law student of Gono University, who has physical disabilities.

The attack comes at a time when cases are being filed against Gonoshasthaya founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury.

“So far, Gonoshasthaya officials and Limon have filed four written complaints with Ashulia Police Station, but police did not record those as general diaries or cases,” Sheikh Alamgir, administration officer of Gonoshasthaya Kendra, told The Daily Star yesterday.

“If police don't accept our complaint, we will go to court for justice,” he added.

Meanwhile, Limon, who is undergoing treatment at Gonoshasthaya Hospital on the Kendra premises, said police assured him of looking into the matter but did not give him any documents, saying they have received his complaint.

Limon said he was attacked when he tried to save female students from being harassed. Doctors said his right arm was fractured.

“Several times, I have asked why they [police] were not registering my case. They said high officials were looking into it,” he told this correspondent yesterday afternoon.

Contacted, Javed Masud, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Ashulia Police Station, said they were investigating the incident. He did not elaborate further.

This correspondent also called the superintendent of police of Dhaka district multiple times in the afternoon, but he did not receive the calls.

AL LEADER 'RECLAIMS' LAND

Amid at least five cases being filed against Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury and the recent attack on a Gonoshasthaya building, an Awami League leader in Savar has “reclaimed” a portion of land by breaking the main entrance to PHA Bhaban, damaging part of the boundary wall and felling 10 trees.

On October 23, Nasir Uddin, a resident of Ashulia's Nolam area, filed a case against Dr Zafrullah and others for allegedly grabbing around 13 decimals of land. Nasir is also science and technology affairs secretary of Savar upazila Awami League.

This correspondent visited the land in the afternoon, where he spoke to Nasir.

Nasir claimed that he bought around 16 decimals of land in 2008 and Gonoshasthaya grabbed 13.25 decimals of it. “Time has come to reclaim my land and so, I did it.”

Some workers were seen erecting a new boundary wall on the land. There was also a signboard saying the land belongs to Nasir Uddin and his brother, next to a damaged security check post of Gonoshasthaya Kendra.

Contacted, Mir Murtuza Ali Babu, registrar of Gono University, which is near the land, said, “Nasir Uddin has grabbed the land illegally. He is just taking advantage of the situation.”

OC Javed Masud refused to comment on this issue as well.
