Petition challenges rickshaw ban

A Supreme Court lawyer yesterday filed a petition with the High Court, challenging Dhaka South City Corporation’s (DSCC) decision to make three streets of the capital off limits to rickshaws.

Advocate Aynunnahar Siddiqua submitted the petition as a supplementary to a pending writ petition filed in 2012.

In the petition, she sought a stay order from the HC on the decision and requested to know what transports the authorities have arranged as alternatives.

Citing  the petition, the lawyer told The Daily Star that  authorities have not arranged proper measures that address the  rickshaw pullers.

Advocate Aynunnahar said the HC may hold hearing on the supplementary petition today.

On July 3, a special committee led by DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon decided that three streets would be made off limits to rickshaws to ease traffic congestion.

The restricted routes are Kuril to Sayedabad via Rampura and Khilgaon; Gabtoli to Azimpur via Asad Gate; and Science Laboratory intersection to Shahbagh intersection.
