‘Harassing’ DU BCL Leader

OC withdrawn, case filed, one arrested

Officer-in-Charge of Dharmapasha Police Station Delwar Hossain was withdrawn and attached to Police Lines on Wednesday night over harassment of a Dhaka University Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader in Sunamganj.

Sunamganj Police's Assistant Superintendent Sujan Chandra Sarkar confirmed it to The Daily Star yesterday.

Afzal Khan, BCL's international affairs deputy-secretary of DU unit, filed a case on Wednesday night, accusing 29 named and 20-25 unnamed persons.

On March 29, Afzal posted on his Facebook, criticising Hefajat-e-Islam for their recent vandalism all over the country. Afzal alleged he was harassed at Jayasree Bazar in Dharmapasha upazila on Tuesday afternoon by supporters of Hefajat and some local Awami League leaders for it.

Al Mujahid, son of local AL leader Abul Hashem Alam, gathered a mob and harassed Afzal at Jayasree Bazar. Afzal was later confined at union AL office in presence of AL leaders. Police reached the spot, cuffed Afzal, and forced him to apologise to the crowd, Afzal told this newspaper.

Afzal was taken to the police station and later released.

Police arrested AL Jayasree Union unit's general secretary Abul Hashem Alam over the incident. Alam was suspended from AL in an emergency meeting of upazila AL unit.
