Novo Nordisk launches electronic registry for diabetes patients

Social Welfare Minister Rashed Khan Menon yesterday launched the country's first electronic diabetes patient registry, said a press release.

“This electronic system is a big milestone for Bangladesh and will benefit diabetes patients,” chief guest Rashed Khan Menon said.

It will provide health outcome data to monitor patient needs and identify problems that need prompt attention, the minister added.

He hoped the system will help to address the rising burden of diabetes to achieve sustainable development goals.

The electronic system will be implemented through Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (BADAS) and its affiliated associations across the country with the support of Novo Nordisk, the release added.

BADAS Secretary General Md Sayef Uddin and Novo Nordisk's Senior Vice President Frederik Kier signed a memorandum of understanding in this regard on December of 2017. 

“As there is no study or survey in Bangladesh providing the exact number of diabetic population, this system will help by giving a clear picture,” said BADAS President Prof AK Azad Khan.

Novo Nordisk has been working to raise awareness against diabetes epidemic and its impact in Bangladesh, said Anand Shetty, managing director of Novo Nordisk Bangladesh.

“We strive to improve the understanding of diabetes as the need for its prevention is critical," he added. 

Anil Kapur, chairman of  World Diabetes Foundation; Md Sayef Uddin, secretary general of BADAS; Zafar Ahmed Latif, director general of BIRDEM General Hospital; and Mohammad Saiful, head of Marketing of Novo Nordisk; were present at the programme.
