No party in power fulfilled people’s expectations

Speakers say on Ganosamhati Andolon’s founding anniversary

Leaders from different political parties yesterday stressed finding a new pathway to politically guide the countrymen instead of blaming only the incumbent government.

They alleged that the parties assuming power in last 48 years had tarnished the spirit of the Liberation War by not fulfilling people’s expectation.

They were speaking at a discussion on “The way forward amid existing political perspective” at Bangladesh Medical Association’s auditorium in the capital. Left leaning party Ganosamhati Andolon organised the discussion marking its 17th founding anniversary.

Speaking there, Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna alleged that both Awami League and Bangladesh Nationalist party (BNP) had failed to meet people’s expectations.

“AL is now ruling the people in an autocratic way and the situation will remain unchanged if BNP assumes power,” he claimed.

Citing massive corruption, abduction, killing and curbing people’s democratic rights during the AL rule, he claimed that people of this region did not see such unpopular government in last five decades.

Prof Ahmed Kamal of DU’s history department said people are hostage in their own independent country due to failure in waging movement against this government.

He said that many are suffering from various problems but they are not taking to the streets as they have lost faith in all political parties.

Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal secretary general Khalequzzaman said when political parties can gain the trust of people, they will stage an upsurge like that of 1969.

Chairing the programme, Zonayed Saki, chief coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolon, said his party was formed to establish equality in society as per the spirit of the Liberation War.

He stressed united efforts -- irrespective of political identity.
