Nippon Foundation to donate $2m for Rohingya education

Nippon Foundation, a Japanese non-profit organisation, is going to donate around USD 2 million (about Tk 17 crore) to Brac towards its education programme for Rohingya children in Cox’s Bazar.

The organisations made the announcement at a press conference held at Brac Centre Inn in the capital yesterday, according to a press release.

About the outcome of the initiative, the press release also said the grant will help build about 50 two-storey moveable steel structures -- to be used as learning centres for about 8,000 Rohingya children.

The aid will also help build about 100 pre-primary learning centres for the host community children in Cox’s Bazar, it added.

Top officials of both organisations -- including Nippon Foundation Chairman Yohei Sasakawa and Brac Executive Director Asif Saleh -- and representatives from the Japanese embassy in Dhaka were present at the event.

Founded in 1962, the Nippon Foundation works with communities in the fields of social safety, youth, culture, poverty, and saving the oceans, among others.
