Newborn rescued from drain in Mymensingh

A woman rescued a newborn boy from a drain at Mymensingh city’s Saleha Market area yesterday morning.

The rescuer, Nafiza Begum, said after Fajr prayers, she went out of her house for a walk around 6am and noticed there was something in the drain.

Quoting Nafiza, Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Police Station Md Mahmudul Islam said the woman suspected that it was a baby. She went near the drain and found a baby lying in the mud.

Seeing the baby, the woman cried out with fear and neighbours rushed to the spot to help, said the official.

The baby had been shaking when he was rescued, the woman took him in her arms for warmth and he was saved, the OC informed quoting locals. Later, the baby was cleaned. Locals informed police about the incident.

On information, police rushed to the spot around 9am and admitted the baby to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) for treatment.

There was a fracture in his left hand and an X-Ray was done at the hospital yesterday afternoon, said Prof Dr Md Anwar Hossain, head of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of MMCH. The fracture is not serious and the baby’s condition is good now, said the doctor.
