A Dhaka court today sent the seven arrestees to jail after rejecting both the remand and bail prayers in a case filed over preventing policemen from discharging their duties in Shahbagh yesterday.

They were picked up from the torch procession brought out in Dhaka's Shahbagh yesterday -- protesting the death of writer Mushtaq Ahmed in custody.

The arrestees are: Md Tamjid Haider (22), Nozir Amir Chowdhury Joy (27), ASM Tanjimur Rahman (22), Md Akib Ahmed (22), Md Arafat Saad (24), Nazifa Jannat (24) and Joyoti Chakravarty (23).

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Morshed Al Mamun Bhuiyan passed the order after Sub-inspector Md Shahidul Islam Shahid of Shahbagh Police Station and also the investigation officer of the case, produced them before it with a seven-day remand for each.

The magistrate, however, allowed police to interrogate them for one day within three working days at jail gate.

In the forwarding report, the IO said the arrestees attacked policemen when they were discharging their duties that left several of them injured. So, they need to be remanded to know about the incidents. While defence submitted separate petitions seeking bail along with cancellation of the remand prayer.

After hearing, the magistrate rejected both the petitions and sent them to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.
