‘Mugger’ killed in Mohammadpur ‘gunfight’

His accomplice held with bullet wounds

An alleged mugger was killed and another injured in a reported gunfight with police in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area early today.

Identities of both the deceased and the injured could not be known immediately, Wahiduzzaman, additional deputy commissioner (Mohammadpur division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), told The Daily Star.    

Tipped off that a gang of muggers took position near Basila Garden City for looting people around 2:30am, a team of Mohammadpur Police Station launched a drive there to arrest them.

Later, a “gunfight” took place between the police team and the muggers, which left two members of the gang injured.

One of the two injured was taken to the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead, said the police official.

Another injured “mugger” was now undergoing treatment under police custody at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (Nitor), popularly known as Pangu Hospital, ADC Wahiduzzaman added.
