Modern Steel Mill Ltd fined Tk 9 lakh for polluting environment

Department of Environment (DoE) Chattogram has fined Modern Steel Mill Limited Tk nine lakh for polluting air.

The fine was imposed after a hearing at the DoE office at Khulshi area of the port city today.

The steel mill has kept their Air Treatment Plant out of operation.

Mohammad Nurullah Nuri, director of DoE Chattogram Metro told The Daily Star the accepted limit of SPM (suspended particulate matter) is 200 micro gram per cubic meter.

But when their team took samples last month from various points close to the factory, they found the SPM was far beyond the accepted limit, he added.

The ATP was defective in treating pollutants emitted by the factory, he said.
