Mobile court sends 19 to jail

Three sent to correction centre

A mobile court of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on Monday night sentenced 22 members of several youth and teen groups to imprisonment ranging from three to six months’, on different charges including taking drugs.

Among them, 19 were sent to jail while the other three -- below the age of 18 -- were sent to the Juvenile Correction Centre in Gazipur, said Bina Rani Das, company commander of Rab-3.

Bina said they conducted the drive around 7pm at Manda Bridge and Hiru Mia alley in Mugda, after receiving numerous complaints from locals against the youths, who had allegedly formed “gangs”.

She further said at least three to four such groups are active in Mugda area.

These are locally known as -- Chan-Jadu group, Devil King, Volume-2 and Bhandari Group, among others.

The groups were allegedly involved in multiple clashes, she said.

Many members of these cliques have also been accused of sexually harassing girls, said the company commander, adding that similar drives will continue in different parts of Dhaka, to arrest derailed youths.
